The Way of Tea

CHA DAO

Tea is one of natures great teachers.  It is medicine in its purest form.  The plant’s teachings are manifested and awakened through ceremony, hot water and stillness.  Tea connects us to ourselves, nature and raises our awareness to both the fragility and beauty in all of the life.  Giving the leaf the space to teach us lends to a life of awareness, connectedness and beauty that unfolds.

The ritual of Tea

茶道

Tea-drinking began in China, and its discovery is credited to the Indian sage Bodhidharma (aka Daruma), the founder of Zen Buddhism. From the 2nd century BCE, Buddhist monks began to drink tea to help support themselves while they meditated and to ward off sleep.

In Japanese, the tea ceremony is called chanoyu, meaning 'hot water for tea', or cha dao or sado, meaning 'way of the tea'. The whole experience was meant to involve a spiritual element, a shared moment of calm and renewal for its participants. As the old Japanese saying goes, cha-Zen ichimi - "Zen and Tea have the same flavour."

Cha Dao

茶道

The Chinese word for tea is cha 茶. The top symbol represents a plant (or grass), the middle part indicates a person and the bottom radical depicts a tree.

Dao philosophy honours the principles of balance, grace, quietude, mindfulness, simplicity and harmony with nature. Dao encompasses the whole of the universe.

Meaning “the way”, dao refers to the natural way of the universe unfolding, together with the way in which humans can live a life of balance and behave in accordance with the universal laws.

During the ceremony you are taught to recognise the sacredness of nature and that life (inclusive of yourself, animals, water, plants, mountains, soil, rivers and oceans) is interconnected and filled with chi, the essence of life itself.

The chi of the mountain where the specific tea was grown, the wind, rain and soil that nourished the tea plant, the sun and moonlight the plant absorbed, the earth that provided clay for making the tea bowl and the pure spring water you collected to brew your tea. All these energies flow through you when you drink a bowl of tea.
